Suji, Marissa, Corey, Charlie, Madeleine & Kati: Food as Medicine
For our project, we used very basic ingredients (sugar, flour, salt, butter, vanilla extract, and Jolly Rancher candies) to bake a giant syringe and pill-shaped cookies. We often think of cookies and candy as being the epitome of junk food and see pills and vaccines as preservers of health. Our project considers the question of food as medicine. By using junk food to represent high-tech health aids, we hope to suggest the idea of the sugar pill and the placebo effect, and also the idea that medicine isn't as good for us as we think. In this way, our project forms a critique of medication as a form of indulgence, just like junk food, but disguised as something healthier.
